A first in Gujarat: Gas-based cremation for animals
In a first in the state, a gas-based cremation home for dead animals will soon come up at Valsad district’s Vapi municipality at a cost of Rs 74 lakh.
Currently, dead animals are buried at the solid waste disposal site of Vapi Nagar Palika in the Chandor area. On average 10 cattle are buried in a month at the solid waste sight, according to Shailesh Patel, Chief Sanitary Inspector of Vapi Nagar Palika. However, with every passing day, he added, a space crunch issue has been witnessed. “Remains are found when fresh burials take place,” he said.
The issue was brought to the notice of Vapi Nagar Palika and Chairperson Kashmira Shah. Subsequently, a proposal for a new cremation home for animals was floated. The ruling body, along with administrative officials, calculated the cost of the project.
“With state and central government grants, a new cremation home for animals will be set up. We passed the proposal at the General Board meeting of Nagar Palika. We have issued a tender and it was passed and the contract was given to a Pune-based agency. The work has started and in the next couple of months it would be finished,” Vapi Nagar Palika Chairperson Kashmira Shah said.
Vapi Nagar Palika Health Department Chairman Suresh Patel said, “The new cremation home will be near the cremation home of humans at Chandor. It will have two gas-based chambers — one for small animals like stray dogs, pigs, and goats and another for big chamber for cattle (buffaloes and cows). We have requested the GSPCL (Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Limited) for the supply of gas for the cremation of animals. They have agreed to a free supply. They did the same for cremation homes for humans The distance between upcoming cremation home animals and humans is around 150 m and GSPCL authorities agreed to install a gas line.”
