Four boys feared drowned in sea at Juhu Koliwada, one rescued
Four minor boys aged between 12 and 16 were feared drowned after five children who were sitting on the edge of the jetty at Juhu Koliwada, near Juhu beach, were washed away in a high tide on Monday evening. While one of them has been rescued, a search operation for the remaining four was underway till 8.45 pm.
According to the civic body officials, the incident was reported at 5.28 pm and personnel of the Flood and Rescue Team (FRT), Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) and police were called in for rescue operations. The Indian Navy deployed a chopper for the rescue operations at 8.20 pm.
According to civic body officials, the minors hailed from Vakola and were on a visit to the beach. “A group of eight boys had come to visit the Juhu Koliwada. While three boys were clicking selfies, five were sitting on the edge of the jetty. Since there were high tides in the sea, a 4.5-metre-long wave washed the five boys away,” Ravi Pawade, a member of MFB’s Flood and Rescue Team told The Indian Express.
Officials also said that one boy was rescued by local fishermen and other residents. The rescued boy is said in a stable condition and was taken to the police station for further investigations.
While the details of the rescued minor have been kept under wraps, the four missing have been identified as, Jay Roshan Tajbariya (15), Manish Yogesh Oganiya (12), Shubham Yogesh Oganiya (15) and Dharmesh Valji Faujiya (16).
Preliminary reports released by the BMC added that the boys were washed away half a kilometre from the shore. “There was a cyclone intimation and winds were strong…,” said Pawade.
Members of the rescue operation team claimed that high tidal waves and darkness night have hampered their work. The civic administration has also requested for divers from the Navy and Coast Guard.
