バスケットボールシューズといえば、
本誌春夏号で1990年代を代表するリーボックの
バスケットボールシューズを掲載。
元リーボックジャパンで現在、フリーライター、
ランナーズパルス編集長の南井正弘氏に
その魅力を解説してもらった。
その記事を紹介する。

リーボックというブランドに関するイメージは、人によって異なるだろう。フィットネスやテニス、そしてポンプやイージートーンのような独自のテクノロジーも印象深いが、バスケットボールカテゴリーを真っ先に挙げる人も少なくないはずだ。“SHAQ ATTAQ”（シャックアタック）は、1992年にリーボックからリリースされたシャキール オニールのシグネチャーモデル第1弾。ルーキー時で120㎏を超える体重だった彼の要望に応えるかたちで、衝撃吸収性よりも安定性を重視した設計だったため、ヘクサライトetc.クッショニングテクノロジーはあえて採用していなかった。シュータン部分にはポンプテクノロジーが配され、シューズと足の一体化を図り、シャキール オニールの巨体を支えた。一方で“QUESTION”（クエスチョン）は、アレン アイバーソンのシグネチャーモデル。1996年のNBAドラフトで全体の1位で指名された彼は、史上最も背の低い1位指名選手ということもあり、一部からはその実力が疑問視された。すなわち「QUESTION」を持たれたのである。そこからこのプロダクトは命名されたわけだが、アイバーソンはルーキーシーズンをリーグ6位の1試合平均23.5得点、同11位の7.5アシスト、同7位の2.07スティールを記録。新人記録となる5試合連続40得点の活躍もあり新人王に輝くなど、自らの実力で一部評論家たちの疑問を払拭したのだ。クエスチョンは、衝撃吸収性に優れたヘクサライトをミッドソールに内蔵したことに加え、サイド部分にも配置したVIZ HEXを採用。これは衝撃吸収にプラスしてシューズの軽量化にも貢献した。NBAというトップリーグでも実力を発揮して答えを出した彼のシグネチャーモデルは、次のモデルから“ANSWER”（アンサー）へと、その名を変えることとなった。これらモデル以前もリーボックのバスケットボールシューズは、その高い機能性でNBAプレーヤーを魅了。1991年のNBAオールスタースラムダンクコンテストで優勝したディー ブラウンが着用したポンプ オムニゾーンIIや、前年の同コンテストを制したドミニク ウィルキンスが着用したポンプ TZといったキックスもバスケットボールコートとストリートで高い人気を誇ったことは、1990年代に青春時代を送った人々にとっては忘れられない思い出である。
